What research found

A 2014 study made the 'pen beats laptop' idea famous. A 2021 direct replication found no clear advantage either way on an immediate quiz, though laptop notes had more words copied straight from the lecture (a 2021 replication study, APS Observer).

What seems to matter more

Writing ideas in your own words instead of transcribing.
Reviewing and testing yourself later.
Fewer distractions on the device you use.

For video notes

Pause the video to write the idea in your words.
Typed notes are easier to search and link later.
Handwriting works great if it keeps you off other tabs.
