Does speed reading work? What the research says

Quick answer

Apps promise you'll read a book in an hour. Courses promise triple speed. Reading scientists have looked hard at these claims.

What 125x is: 125x is a web app at 125x.app. You connect your YouTube subscriptions, and it gives you a feed of the latest videos from the channels you follow, each with a summary: a verdict, the 5 key takeaways, and the spoiler, plus Actionable and Lessons tabs with more tips. You read that and decide what's actually worth opening.

What research found

A review by reading researchers found a trade-off between speed and accuracy. It's unlikely readers can double or triple their speed, from around 250 words per minute to 500 to 750, and understand the text as well (a 2016 research review on speed reading).

Skimming can be two to four times faster than normal reading, with lower comprehension. The review found the reliable way to read faster with good understanding is practice and a bigger vocabulary.

When skimming is the right move

Finding one fact in a long article.
Deciding if a book is worth reading properly.
Reviewing something you already know.

Read faster the honest way

Read more, every day. Practice is what builds speed.
Read the table of contents and chapter summaries first.
Skip chapters that don't serve your goal.
Slow down for the parts that matter.

The same goes for video

Speech is slower than reading to begin with, so many people follow videos fine at faster playback. See watch YouTube at 2x speed.

FAQ: questions people ask

Is speed reading real?

Research found a trade-off: you can go faster, but comprehension drops. Doubling speed with full understanding is unlikely.

How can I read faster without losing comprehension?

Read more often to build vocabulary and fluency, and skim parts that don't matter to you.

Is skimming bad?

Skimming is useful for finding facts or deciding what to read closely. It gives lower comprehension than full reading.
